North Goatfell :: 17 May, 2006
Well we're in a Black and White groove thang for now, something to do with the mist and clouds which I reckon come out a bit better than they do in colour. I didn't even realise, until Jeannie added it, that Fjall was an ancient word for Fell but she's pretty good at all the old Anglo Saxon language stuff. So you see, up here in't north, we often stride out on the fells, and pretty good they are too.

Another thing I hadn't realised until we went to Arran, was that there aren't any Munros on there, Goatfell just falls short; but mind you, you are starting from sea level so to summit it you actually have a higher climb than most other Munros.

Now before we get any more questions about felling goats on Munros, a Munro is a mountain in Scotland over 3000ft or 914m high and there are, I think, 284 of them, not quite as many Cornflakes as you can get in a packet. Marilyns may be found all over Britain and there seem to be 1542 of them, they need a drop of 500ft or 150m on all sides. I think that means that all Munros are subsets of Marilyns but I get lost around this point, I just like climbing big hills.
